August 6th Metroid's 25th Anniversary

Happy 25 to Metroid today. THis day 25 years ago Metroid was released for teh Famicom System in Japan. Definitely in my top 3 favorite Nintendo Franchises, a shame it doesnt get the love of Mario or Zelda.

To be fair- it has far fewer memorable characters and moments (I've played them all, except Zero Mission).

I believe zero mission was a reimagining of the original Metroid. Very awesome regardless but you're not missing a completely new storyline. My favorite character is Mario, my favorite game is Ocarina of Time, but my favorite franchise overall is Metroid. I hope they bless us with a new installment on the 3DS and I think it's a no brainer that a Metroid on Wii U would arrive at some point.

How old was Samus when she arrived 25 years ago? She must be getting close to retiring with those old bones.

Metroid officially turns 25 in America on August 15th. We got the girl a week later on our system.

I imagine Metroid games take a lot more work to make than Mario games. Zelda comes close, but Metroid games still tend to be denser, if perhaps not bigger. Whether or not that's true, Metroid doesn't have the wide appeal or recognition of the other two, so with as much work as it takes to make a major Metroid title, they may just not be as profitable.

Plus Metroid seems to be having a 2D/3D identity crisis. Fans are split on which they like better. (Yes, Mario does both, too, but as a super-ulra-mega-star, there's plenty of him to go around.)

I dunno, I think the puzzles in Zelda games are infinitely more imaginative (therefore harder to create) than a dense, big map. Most Metroid stuff is pretty straightforward (not counting the cryptic stuff of the NES/GB days...) And the actual look and feel of Zelda stages tend to be grander, too, in my opinion.

Not hating on Metroid at all, though. Never been a fav of mine, however.

I'm not saying one is better than the other. They're hard to compare. Bah, I don't know what I'm trying to say.

I've loved the atmosphere more in Metroid games than Zelda games. The whole space exploration thing really pulls me in, even more than most Zelda's.

Atmosphere is sort of Metroid's thing.

I'm all about Atmosphere. Just make a game called Atmosphere Wii and it will be the best thing I ever played.
