Roger Ebert posted a new blog about why video games are not art, and won't be in our lifetime. http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2010/04/video_games_can_never_be_art.html

Well, what have
you to say everyone? Are video games art? Why, or why not?

I feel
like I'm on the fence, actually. As bad as I want to say it is art, it
really depends on the definition you are using. For me, video games, no
matter how extraordinary, always have one true goal at heart: money,
publication, recognition. Games want money first, recognition after the
fact. I know plenty of game creators are full of good intentions but as
an artist myself I can acknowledge that I want accolades and even wealth
if possible.

Ah ha! So you read it too! Hypocrisy and
convolution in my own sentiment! It's true, the gaming industry revolves
around money and publication etc. But what art form doesn't? What
author doesn't have dreams of achieving status via his skill? Or
composer? Or anyone great in any medium; be that architecture,
landscaping, cooking.

Essentially his argument is moot because
art itself, no matter the definition, is relative.

All
in all *bad word* off Ebert.

I would consider games art, even bad games. This is so because art is not synonymous with good. There is good and bad art, just like there are good and bad games. But you nailed it. It's all relative. What's good to me might be bad to you. The only constant I'd like to address is that games are art, no matter what.
