Nintendo 3DS announced!

In a surprise announcement today Nintendo have revealed the Nintendo 3DS. It will have 3D gaming without the need for 3D glasses and will be backwards compatible with DS and DSi games!! It is due to launch next year.

So, what are your thoughts on this? I'm wondering how the 3D will work without glasses...

Actually, I'm starting to think that the next generation of consoles will include support for 3D TVs.

That's cool. I don't see it getting much support since it will likely be years before 3D TVs are common. It's nice that they're making the effort, though.

That was sarcasm, right? 'Cause the 3DS should have ample support, seeing as it's self-contained. (In other words, it doesn't require other expensive high-tech equipment to use.)

i dont get your take here? 3D TV is now on the market, they have the capability to supply content for the TV's, why is this a negative thing?

I'm not sure he meant it was a bad thing. Perhaps just that it might be premature or even pointless. Certainly it's not a bad thing for the consumer, since they're adding the support for free.

WOW this topic sure got a lot of replies in less than 24 hours! It does seem odd for Nintendo to announce this now the DSiXL is out in the US. Which DS do they want us to buy?!

Wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute. Nintendo 3DS? .........Holy crap I just wanted Nintendo DSi XL but now they are making Nintendo 3DS?! ......Oh man I am not liking this one bit now.

Nintendo innovating once more! I think the guys at Sony right now are scrambling to rush a 3DPSP out the door before Nintendo like Sixaxis.

3D games for PS3 does sound catered to techies (or rich bastards). 3D TV's are out there but have you seen how much they are? Such a small percentage of homes have these it would not be a smart move to start making 3D PS3 games now.

A tad early on the announcement. This may hurt XL sales. Grandma will still buy one at least.

Even with this being the true successor to the DS (sales will start back at 0), the DS line should eventually top the PS2 as the best selling game unit in history. I wonder what it will finally be called? I'm sure Nintendo 3DS is just a project name like Revolution or Dolphin.

My take is that Sega utilized a lot of new technology, that while interesting and very cool to someone who likes the tech, left them in the dust. No one could afford their expensive crap, or had the gear to use it in SONY's case. Niche market, to be sure.

SONY does this a lot of the time, and in many of the same ways. Rushing things out before they get the bugs out, etc. That's my take. It is premature, unnecessary, and wholly interesting to a guy like me but to average video game purchaser, what's the hub bub, bub?

My bad. Didn't mean to repeat that. I think the GameCube was project named Dolphin.

Yes. Gamecube was Dolphin. Wii, of course, was Revolution. I think the next code name is "Consternation."
